January 2013 software announcements! (and Kevin’s New Classmate – Part Two)
The EDCompass community has been hard at work helping Kevin solve a mystery. Who he will meet when he returns to class on January 30? Did you get a chance to watch Kevin’s New Classmate – Part Two? Are there any new clues?
People at SMART have read your guesses with great interest. It’s not January 30 yet, but we decided to reveal some more information to help you solve this mystery!
Many of you want Kevin’s new classmate to be a version of SMART Notebook software that could be used on both Apple and Android devices. We also noticed you are very keen for Kevin’s new classmate to enable even better collaboration between students and teachers.
Here is your clue: Kevin’s new classmate is NOT a member of the SMART Notebook family.
You did guess right about one thing though – we do have exciting announcements for educators and students who collaborate and learn with SMART Notebook software!
1. SMART Notebook Web Beta
SMART Notebook Web Beta is a web-based version that includes some desktop SMART Notebook software features and compliments the SMART Collaborative Learning Solution. The beta encourages students and educators to collaborate and personalize learning with any Internet-connected mobile device as they move between individual, small group and whole class learning. Join the beta at smartnotebook.com to try new features as they are released and help us name this new product!
2. XC Beta add-on for SMART Notebook software
XC Beta is an add-on for SMART Notebook software by SMART Ecosystem Network member Freiland that brings student collaboration from mobile devices to the SMART Board interactive whiteboard so every student can actively contribute to class discussions and capture ideas together on a single SMART Notebook page for the whole class to see and explore. Student devices connect to the SMART Notebook page with a QR code. This beta will be available on SMART Exchange in the coming weeks and we welcome your name ideas for this one too!
Embedded Code widget is the latest addition to the SMART Exchange collection of interactive widgets for SMART Notebook pages. With the Embed Code widget, you can easily embed any third-party interactive widget directly on a SMART Notebook page – you are no longer restricted by widgets made only for use with SMART software. Group chats, TeacherTube videos and mp3 players will play directly on the page when you embed code with this widget.
We hope you are as excited about these additions to the SMART Notebook family as we are to share them with you. The beta versions will start off with some features and more will be added as the beta program moves forward, so let us know what your top feature requests are!
Remember, there’s more to come!
We still have Kevin’s mystery to solve before January 30. What is your guess now?

I would love to be able to embed code directly into a smartboard lesson. However, when I search on Smart Exchange I am not finding the particular widget! Help!
Love the embed code widget…can”t wait to give it a try!
This is some exciting stuff. I am jazzed for all three of these things and can”t wait to play with these new tools. Plus Kevin”s new classmate revealed tomorrow, good times with SMART.
Looking for a quick embed code widget, use the Voki widget. Copy the embed code from YouTube or any other site into the Voki widget, then resize as needed. How to video: http://youtu.be/nqnzxkcDr4w
It seems as the embedded code widget will be absolutely AWESOME!!!
I””m excited that you are excited about the Embedded Code Widget. @Lana, yesterday was the first announcement of this new widget and it isn””t available on SMART Exchange quite yet. Given the enthusiasm, I will let you know as soon as it is available. Same goes for XC Beta add-on for Notebook software.
I can”t wait! The anticipation is killing me!
Hi everyone! The XC add-on Beta for SMART Notebook and Embedded Code widget are both available to download from SMART Exchange now. Easily found when you search for widgets.
