Preston Middle School in Fort Collins, Colorado, has been named a 2011 Intel School of Distinction for its demonstrated excellence in science education.

Through its innovative STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program, Preston encourages students to bring out their ‘natural scientist’ and explore, invent and experiment in classes like robotics and biotechnology.

“STEM education is an integral, cross curricular, philosophy at Preston Middle School.  All students must interpret text, extrapolate data, use and problem-solve current technology and communicate results,” says Tracey Winey, a media specialist and SMART Exemplary Educator at the school.

According to the Intel School of Distinction website, of all non-charter schools in the Poudre School District, Preston had the second greatest number of students scoring at or above proficiency – 65 percent compared to the district average of 59 percent and the state average of 48 percent.

As a SMART Showcase School, Preston emphasizes the use of technology in its STEM classes. The school has SMART Board interactive whiteboards in 90 percent of its classrooms, and also has SMART Document Cameras, SMART Response interactive response systems and SMART Slate wireless slates.

Winey says that SMART products are essential to helping students engage and understand science.

“Preston Middle School relies heavily on SMART Technologies.  SMART Boards allow the students to visualize and participate in scientific processes like animal dissections and charting and analyzing data.  3D animations and rotations inspire curiosity and creativity.  SMART Notebook provides students a vehicle to create and present professional learning outcomes to their teachers, peers and Fort Collins Community,” she says.

Preston also received a $10,000USD cash grant – congratulations to the dedicated staff at Preston Middle School!
