SMART Finds Itself in the Lost City of the Incas
SMART Board interactive whiteboards are found all over the world – from mountainous regions of Azerbaijan to the savannas of Zimbabwe.
But recently, several demonstration units of SMART Board interactive whiteboards, along with a team from SMART’s Peruvian reseller, Top Technologies, went on a tour that could be considered at the “height” of its travels – in South America, anyways!
Old meets new
In early September, a team from Top Technologies began touring Peru to create awareness of how educational technology, like interactive whiteboards, can enhance teaching and learning.
The team was travelling mainly through rural areas, and when they toured the area around an Ancient Inca civilization – that’s where the real adventure started!
One of the most famous areas in Peru is Machu Picchu, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. It’s known as the Lost City of the Incas due to its remote location more than 2,000 meters above sea level. Many villages in the highlands of Peru are characteristically sprawled out and surrounded by towering green mountains. Weather conditions and rough geography made the transportation between training sessions difficult.
The team travelled from Cusco, (which was the site of the historic capital of the Inca Empire and is now a World Heritage Site) through every municipality and school around the Urubamba Valley by car, and then travelled three hours by train.
After one training session, they made a pit stop at a historic site in Cusco – Plaza de Armas – which is where the picture at the top was taken.
During their tour, the team from Top Technologies took a 72-hour trip (including a nine-hour boat journey) to reach the main village of Machiyenga in Camisea, a native community. Up to this point, this village had no access to technology, including communications tools like e-mail.
A formal presentation of SMART education solutions was made to the native authorities, teachers and students, and they were amazed with all they saw. As a result, two classrooms will be equipped with a SMART Board 600i interactive whiteboard system, SMART Document Camera, SMART Slate wireless slate and SMART Notebook Math Tools in November.
Continuing on with their tour, the team arrived at the city of Arequipa, where a SMART Board 480iv interactive whiteboard system was installed in the town of Chalhuanca which is located in the district of Yanque. This town is situated 4,400 meters above sea level – the highest elevation SMART products have been demonstrated in Latin America. After this installation, the mayor purchased six SMART Board 480iv interactive whiteboard systems for the school. Watch a video of the installation.
The SMART Board interactive whiteboard has enhanced learning and collaboration in many places – from the most remote one-room school houses to high-tech
education facilities in urban centers.
Where will the SMART Board go next?
