Submitted by SLSMART on September 5, 2012 – 6:00 pm11 Comments

The anticipated SMART Notebook App for iPad is now available on the Apple App Store.

With iPad becoming increasingly popular at schools across North America, SMART developed a light App version of SMART Notebook collaborative learning software. The SMART Notebook App for iPad enables personalized and collaborative learning by allowing students to create basic multimedia files and complete SMART Notebook lesson activities using an iPad.

Your students can use the SMART Notebook App for individual and small group learning with an iPad, and the full desktop version of SMART Notebook collaborative learning software with a SMART Board interactive whiteboard for small-group and whole-class learning.

What can I do with the SMART Notebook app?

  • Complete pre-created SMART Notebook lesson activities and create basic multimedia files using a choice of tools.
    • Zoom and pan – Get a closer look and navigate content by using zoom in or out and the panning to reveal a different area of the content
    • Text – Insert or edit typed text and change the font type, color, size and justification on the page using the Text Properties
    • Pens and Erasers – Create drawings and annotations using colored digital pens and highlighters and choose the right-sized eraser to wipe out ink
    • Objects – Organize information and change a page layout. Tap to move, rotate or scale an object. Double tap or tap and hold an object to activate the Infinite Cloner and change the Sound properties
    • Photos – Make files visual by inserting photos from the iPad camera and camera roll
    • Sound – Enhance the auditory experience by adding sound recordings to objects. Double-tap or tap and hold an object to pop-up the Context menu to record a new sound
    • AutoSave – let  the app save all revisions automatically as you work
    • Undo & Redo – quickly undo or redo your last change with one tap
    • E-mail files – share SMART Notebook files by e-mailing one or more files from the SMART Content File Manager or from directly inside an open file

Note: Flash-based content, including SMART Lesson Activity Toolkit content, is not supported by Apple iOS decvices, like the iPad

  • Manage all your files with the SMART Content File Manager that gives you a thumbnail view of each. You can quickly find a file by panning to browse the thumbnails, tap to open a new or existing file, and tap below the preview thumbnail to type a file name with the virtual iPad keyboard.
  • Save files from a desktop computer to a web-based storage device, like Dropbox or Google Drive, to access from an iPad, and asynchronously collaborate with small group of students, or e-mail files with one tap.
  • With Internet connectivity, access SMART Notebook files that are saved in web storage services or download SMART Notebook files directly from the SMART Exchange website.
  • Display content from an iPad to a SMART display for whole class discussion using AirPlay and an AppleTV or using an HDMI or VGA cable
  • Set the language to English, UK English, French, Spanish, Italian or German.

I downloaded this app the other day when it became available and am thrilled with what I can do with it. I will be using it to help teach our local first nation language to kindergarten students. It will be a great way to extend our whole group SMARTboard lessons to more individual activities on the iPad. Another great innovation from SMART, Thanks!

  2. Will there be updates to include the other features of Notebook?

SMART will be adding more features to the SMART Notebook app for iPad based on customer feedback. Is there a particular feature that you are looking for?

  4. I was super excited about this app, but I have to say I”m just a little disappointed. There”s no way to go to full screen, there”s no way to save to a “My Content” folder like in the computer version. How cool would it be to be able to import that My Content folder to the iPad app version. I wonder if SMART is looking for ways to get animations into the app; obviously it would have to be in something other than Flash. I think it”s a great start though, and as soon as some of the bugs are fixed, I can”t wait to introduce this to my 3 – 5 teachers who are 1:1 with iPads this year.

Thanks for your feature request! SMART will continue to invest in the Notebook app for iPad and will consider these for future releases.

  6. I”m looking for a way to view my notebook files full screen. I use DropBox to transfer my computer made smart files to my ipad. I would like to use the app to display my presentation to class through an apple TV. Please make a feature to be able to view the presenation full screen.

Just downloaded the app to my own Ipad. I am very excited. I made my first program last night. I am able to record a sound, but I have not yet found the right button to play the sound when I attach it to an object. Am I missing something????

Meg P -> SMART Notebook App doesn”t support sharing but I”ll add that as a feature request. Apple has a feature which would allow screen sharing from an iPad to an Apple TV. Here”s some more information on setting that up. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5209

David B -> Once you have added your sound to the object, you should see an icon in the corner of your object. Taping that once will play the sound and tapping it again will pause it.

Can I echo the sentiments regarding full screen capability. My school has a nice new projector wall and huge projection capability but it is distracting for the pupils to see all the previous slides, and worse, slides that are comig up as I cannot let my lesson flow properly without them second guessing what”s coming up! Please add the full screen feature as quickly as possible please.

As others mentioned… please consider adding the full screen capability for the sake of presentation! Thank you!
